CULTIVATION : POINTED GOURD

Land preparation and Nutrient Management for Pointed Gourd
  • Pointed gourd doesn't grow well in heavy soils so land should be plowed 2 to 3 times until it reaches fine tilth condition
  • Thereafter, application of 20 to 25 tons FYM/ha enhances the soil fertility
  • 90 : 60 : 50 Kg N : P : K per hectare is recommended for Pointed Gourd
Male Female ratio maintenance in Pointed Gourd
Since Pointed Gourd is a dioecious plant, a single plant determines only one sex. All the male plants in field gives zero yield. To get maximum yield, female-male ratio pf Pointed Gourd should be maintained 9:1. About 10% male are sufficient to pollinate female plants in 1ha of land.

Planting requirements for Pointed Gourd
Pointed gourd are propagated by stem cuttings. Stem are made about 60cm from one year fruiting vines of both male and female plants. Trellis system should be done for effective pollination. The trellis is generally 2m in height. Vertical trellis is preferred.than flatbeds for higher yields. Spacing is 1.5-2m * 1.5-2m in method of vines.

Irrigation and Intercultural operations of Pointed Gourd
1st irrigation is done immediately after planting and subsequents irrigations @3to4 days interval. It doesn't tolerates water logging condition.
Weeding can be done manually and mechanically. On post shoot emergence spray herbicides like Gramaxone (1.0% a.i.) per hectare along with mulching to control weeds and to ensure higher yields.
